You showrunners reveal how those Cardi B tweets came to be

This article contains spoilers for the final season of You.

Cardi B can't believe what happened to Joe Goldberg.

In the final season of You, the rapper — a known fan of the series — played a small part in Joe Goldberg's (Penn Badgley) journey. First, in episode 7, after Joe's heartfelt interview went viral following the murder accusations, the show featured a Cardi B tweet that read: "When there are allegations but he's a 10 #JoeGoldberg."

But that wasn't the only time Joe went viral. In the series finale, not only did Joe end up in jail, but he lost his penis in the process. Confused? Well, when Joe tried to kill his currently love, Bronte (Madeline Brewer), she shot his dick off. And just like that, Joe once again found himself the subject of internet fodder.

As Bronte says in the final episode, she "accidentally turned him into a walking dick joke." So following his arrest, the rapper tweeted, "He WAS a 10 now he's a 2 ... inches #JoeGoldberg."

For years now, Badgley and Cardi B. have shared social interactions about her love for the show. At one point, Badgley even said he'd love to have her on if they could figure it out. So when the showrunners knew they needed a viral moment, they decided to turn to one of the series' most outspoken fans.

"Penn and Cardi have this really fun internet relationship, and so we knew we wanted to use Cardi in some way in the season," co-showrunner Justin W. Lo says. "We had already used her music in season 4 when he's cutting up the body, but we wanted to see, could it be a cameo? How could we incorporate her?"

The moment ultimately came to them. "We figured out, if everybody's going to be popping off, we're like, 'Of course, Cardi,'" co-showrunner Michael Foley adds. In terms of how they made it happen, Foley adds, "We crafted those lines and then sent them on to her. We knew she was a fan. I happened to be at the same agency as her, so it was a matter of my agent getting together with her agent, and it was as easy as that."

In the end, Cardi approved.

The final season of You is available on Netflix now.
